The term Cryptozoology was coined in 1959 by Lucien Blancou in a book dedicated to the foremost researcher of unknown animals, Bernard Heuvelmans. As the term has now become a standard part of modern vocabulary and appears in almost all dictionaries, it is defined as "the science of hidden animals". It combines the three Greek words: kryptos, zoon and logos, which mean, respectively, hidden, animal, and discourse. In 1955, Heuvelman published On the Track of Unknown Animals and the new discipline was born. By 1982, the International Society of Cryptozoology was founded at a meeting held at the Smithsonian Institution. According to this meeting, Cryptozoology concerns "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they were not supposed to occur, either now or in the past), as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or recent past...What makes an animal of interest to cryptozoology...is that it is unexpected". To be an animal of interest, it also must have at least one trait "truly singular, unexpected, paradoxical, striking, emotionally upsetting and thus be capable of mystification" according to Bernard Heuvelman.
The most famous creatures of Cryptozoology are the spectacular and disputed Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch and Colossal Squid. And while these legendary creatures have made the study of cryptids (as cryptozoologists call them) well known throughout the world, it is only a fraction of the hidden, un-catalogued, or out-of-place animals that have advanced this discipline. In 1812, Baron Georges Cuvier, the revered French biologist considered the father of Paleontology, declared the end of the age of zoological discovery. "There is," he said, "little hope of discovering new species [of large animals]. I hope nobody will ever seriously look for [Sea Serpents] in nature; one could as well search for the animals of Daniel or for the beast of the Apocolypse." A short seven years later, in 1819, the American tapir was found, the first of thousands of "new" animals to be uncovered in the last few centuries. Some other animals include the Giant Squid (1870s), Okapi (1901), the Komodo dragon (1912), the koupey (1937), and the coelacanth (1938). At one time even the Giant Panda was considered elusive and unknown, living in the valleys of the Himalayas, since it took 65 years between its "discovery" and the capture of a live one.
Cryptozoology represents the original way animals were studied and discovered. Researchers would go to new places and listen to local legends and reports. They would be led to amazing animals that they would document or capture to show off back in Europe at zoos or schools, where they would formally classify them. But more often than not, Cryptozoologists and their discipline is dismissed by other recognized fields like paleontologists, anthropologists and zoologists as a pseudo-science due to some of the extraordinary claims. For many, "the search for unknown animals was at best a tainted enterprise, at worst an exercise in folly."
Hoaxes also figure into the perception of Cryptozoology. From false news reports in the late-19th century to the Patterson Film today, Cryptozoologists fight an uphill battle to get their questions answered and creatures found.

A fifty-foot monster is said to lurk beneath the cold, isolated waters of North America. The stories from Lake Okanagan date back to the earliest First Nation peoples, who lived in fear of this terrifying creature in the lake that became known as "Ogopogo." According to eyewitness accounts, this ominous creature has a large snake-like body, large eyes and can move at high speeds. Sightings of this lake creature are so common that it has been seen more times than Scotland's Loch Ness Monster, making Ogopogo the world's most documented lake creature. With new, photographic evidence and an array of high-tech technology, MonsterQuest launches expeditions to this lake.

Sea Monsters, airing April 22nd, 9:00 EST/8:00 Central
Mariners have long told stories of frightening beasts that stalk the coast of Florida, but new video could prove that old sailors were seeing real sea monsters. A forked tail, ferocious teeth and a large body were all characteristics of the historic sea monsters. Now, one Florida man says that not only has he witnessed these creatures on countless occasions, but he also has hours of video proof. Experts are divided over the controversial evidence that shows tantalizing glimpses of these strange sea creatures. One marine biologist claims it is a disfigured known species, another expert says it is a seal thought long extinct, and still others maintain that it is something altogether unheard of. Whatever monster lurks here, close to innocent vacationers, MonsterQuest will investigate.

Ape Island, airing April 29 at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central
In the Pacific Northwest, a small island may hold the clue to unravelling the mystery of the legendary Sasquatch. Vancouver Island is a densely forested land mass located about 70 miles northwest of Seattle, Washington. The island is separated from Canada's mainland by water and is a popular destination for hikers, hunters and possibly something frightening and mysterious. Natives told tales to their children of an ape-like beast to be feared that would steal them should they venture into the forest. More than just stories of a bogeyman, recent witnesses tell equally terrifying stories of a monster that attacks as they sleep and is seen devouring fish on the coastline. Now our expedition team follows up these reports, launches their own hunt and finds that recent scientific discoveries of swimming apes could lead them to their most astounding discovery yet.

Monsterquest Tomorrow...
The most compelling evidence for the creature known as Bigfoot may be the increasing close encounters that are frightening witnesses in rural America. Historic stories have told of violent interactions that range from objects being thrown to frightening abductions by hairy beasts. As extraordinary as these stories sound, people continue to recount physical interactions with creatures that they cannot explain. Witnesses from Minnesota and Washington State have all had frightening run-ins with the monsters while driving; another witness in rural Indiana talks with terror of the night that he was grabbed by something very powerful out in a forest. MonsterQuest will investigate whether witness are seeing known animal or the same Bigfoot creature that has been spoken of throughout history. MonsterQuest employs polygraph examinations, DNA analysis and bite force tests to discover what monster is turning up its aggression.

MonsterQuest : Mega Jaws Airs on Wednesday March 18 09:00 PM EST/8:00 Central
Sharks have terrified people for centuries and deep within the forbidding waters of Mexico's Baja Peninsula may lurk a mammoth sixty foot monster. Could it be a new giant species or some living relic, hidden in the sea? In prehistoric times, huge carnivorous sharks, more than twice the size of a great white, ruled the waves. Marine experts claim these giants went extinct, but evidence may challenge that. Meanwhile, frightened Mexican fisherman talk of being stalked by a "Black Demon"; and sailors report close collisions with a shark unlike anything that they have encountered before. In a search for answers, MonsterQuest uses a combined air and sea search for this monster shark that may be prowling the last unexplored frontier of our planet.

GATORS IN THE SEWERS
What if one of the most famous and terrifying urban legends was not a legend but a frightening fact? History tells us that the idea of alligators lurking around in the sewers of New York City is based in truth. In the mid 1930s three teenagers pulled an eight-foot alligator from a storm drain. Reports persisted until a skeptical superintendant of sewers, Teddy May, was forced to investigate for himself. What May found shocked even him--swarms of alligators alive beneath the busy main street of Americas biggest city. Crews were sent in to kill the deadly reptiles, but the stories of the gators in the sewers lived on. Experts, however, are divided over whether it is scientifically possible for alligators to continue to exist in the sewers, so a MonsterQuest team sets out to search for modern evidence of these monsters. Herpetologists and underground explorers join forces and use the latest in remote-operated camera technology to delve into the depths of New York's sewers.Review: Monsterquest 2-25-09

Review: Monsterquest 2-18-09
This was a really good episode, the first Hairy Hominids episode of the season on Swamp Stalker, the Fouke Monster. Members of the Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy are in the swamps close to Fouke, in the Sulphur River Bottoms searching for proof of the beast. Several eyewitness accounts are recounted as well, as well as recounting about the movie The Legend of Boggy Creek. Loren Coleman is interviewed about the Fouke Monster as well. Rick Noll is also involved with the expedition, and helps out with it. Not only is the search taking place in the Boggy Creek area, but also in the Ouachita Mountains in southeastern Oklahoma. Some gamecams are also set up, and Dr. Jeff Meldrum is seen examining the Fouke Monster cast. He thinks it could be possibly a bear track, but is cautiously optimistic. There is also a scat sample found which seems to be rather large, but is found to be from a feral hog. There are also sightings recounted from other areas of Arkansas. One thing some expedition members are doing is taking a kayak into the swamps and rowing along the shorelines, with infrared flashlights on their heads, and broadcasting sounds into the dark swamps. The same thing is occurring in the Ouachita Mountains, with TBRC members Alton Higgins and Daryl Colyer. Daryl also recounts his own experience seeing a Hairy Hominid. The evidence is gathered, trailcams are examined, and what is revealed is...well, I won't give too much away, Next week focuses on the Jersey Devil, beginning at 9:00 EST/8:00 Central on History.
